EL PROYECTO
Legado de una tragedia surge a finales de 2004 siguiendo la estela de varias óperas rock editadas en esa época cuya filosofía se basaba en reunir un verdadero all star de músicos dentro de la escena rockera alrededor de una historia conceptual. Después de disfrutar de obras como Avantasia, Nostradamus o Da Vinci, Joaquín Padilla y Jacobo García empiezan a esbozar la idea de llevar a cabo una obra similar, una pieza conceptual que reuniera por primera vez al mayor número posible de músicos nacionales e internacionales de habla hispana en un proyecto pionero de estas dimensiones en nuestro país, que demostrará que el rock nacional late con la misma pasión que el de sus compañeros foráneos.
La devoción que ambos sienten por la figura de Edgar Allan Poe hizo fácil la elección del eje central de la historia y comenzaron a escribir. A pesar de tratarse de una fábula, todos los datos ofrecidos en la obra tienen un absoluto rigor histórico. Para facilitar el largo trabajo de documentación se pusieron en contacto con The Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore quienes pusieron a su disposición una minuciosa biografía del escritor -incluyendo datos y material gráfico inaccesibles al gran público- en la que fundamentar la obra.
LA OBRA
Legado de una tragedia es una ópera rock basada en la vida y obra del escritor norteamericano Edgar Allan Poe. Dividida en dos actos, Crepúsculo y Ocaso, la obra repasa en forma de fábula la atormentada vida del genio.
Nacido en una familia pobre, y huérfano desde los dos años, está condenado a una vida de miseria. “La muerte”, realizando un juego macabro decide dotarle de la genialidad a cambio de atormentarle durante toda su vida. La obra, que tiene una estructura cíclica, comienza en la actualidad en un cementerio de Baltimore -donde está enterrado Poe-, en el que un enterrador se encuentra con un misterioso gato negro -título de una de las obras más importantes de Poe-. Atónito ve como el gato le muestra su secreto: alberga el espíritu del escritor que vaga errante hasta que su alma se libere.
A lo largo de la ópera se va narrando sus andanzas, sus fracasos, su paso por el ejército, su boda con su prima de tan sólo trece años, su relación con Charles Dickens, su particular visión de la religión, hasta que finalmente comienza su declive a raíz de la muerte de su esposa, derrumbándose mentalmente y abandonándose a una vida de excesos que le llevaría a una muerte indigna, ahogado en la miseria. Al final, el enterrador se despierta en mitad de la noche sin poder discernir si lo que ha visto es real o sólo es un sueño.
Legado de una tragedia incluye además algunas piezas musicadas basadas en obras de Edgar Allan Poe, concretamente en dos de sus relatos: “El cuervo” y “El péndulo”, además de incluirse una pequeña introducción compuesta sobre lo que están considerados los dos primeros versos de los que se tiene constancia del autor, escritos por él a la edad de 15 años.

En las gélidas noches del cementerio Westminster Burying Ground (Baltimore), donde se pudren los restos de Edgar Allan Poe, el enterrador Marcel Hölle aguarda a que el rumor del amanecer aniquile su tedioso turno. De pronto, una extraña aparición le revela un secreto maldito, eterno. Entre las tumbas roídas por el viento aparece un gato negro que le narrará su historia.

Los padres de Edgar, David Poe Jr. y Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins, familia de actores, fueron arrancados de su lado por su tuberculosis cuando era apenas un bebé. Su tío John Allan Poe se hizo cargo de él cediéndole su apellido. Las fuerzas de la oscuridad que habitan los senderos del averno, guiadas por la muerte, huyen de su letargo hilvanando un macabro juego que sacia su sed de dolor: convertir a ese pobre huérfano en genio a cambio de su tormento eterno.
3. Atormentado
El primer texto que se conoce de Poe son un par de versos escritos en una noche tormentosa a la edad de quince años.
4. Preludios nocturnos
Poe vaga sin rumbo naufragando en el juego y el alcohol, amansando deudas, enemistándose con su tío, escapando del hastío que le produce su vida universitaria en Charlottesville, Virginia.

A pesar de que la alargada sombra del amor se había posado sobre él en su infancia su corazón no se desboca hasta que se encuentra con Virginia, su prima de 14 años, con quien contrae matrimonio en 1836.
6. Delirios de Amor
A pesar de ser uno de los fundadores de la narrativa policíaca, su personaje más célebre Auguste Dupin cayó en el olvido sepultado en un segundo plano en la injusta historia de la literatura. Desde su cuna de odio reclama su gloria.

En 1845 su pluma traza uno de sus poemas más terroríficos, “El cuervo”.

En 1842 un abatido Poe, quien no descubre su sitio como escritor, se encuentra en Philadelphia con Charles Dickens quien abrumado por su obra le incita a que no cese en su labor literaria. Incluso le promete publicar sus manuscritos en Inglaterra.... promesa que jamás cumpliría.

“Quizás en algún rincón del tiempo futuro habrá lugar para que los desquiciados sueños de un loco desalmado sean considerados dignos de publicarse. Pobre diablo. ¿De veras pensó que mancharía mis manos con sus letras putrefactas?”.

ACTO II: OCASO
El pozo y el péndulo fue uno de los relatos más tenebrosos de la vida de Poe.
11. El pozo y el péndulo
Autoproclamado señor de sus pesadillas, su genialidad le impedirá compartir su cetro con dioses que le habían retirado su gracia. En el desigual duelo con Dios, Poe mantuvo su arrogancia frente a sus mortales dudas hacia la providencia.
12. Reinando en su propio mundo
La tuberculosis, quien ya le arrebatara a sus padres y a su hermano mayor, regresa para asestar una nueva dentellada llevándose consigo a Virginia. Poe se aferra a su amor aunque se le escapa de entre los dedos como bruma de medianoche.
13. Adiós Amor
El dolor azota a Poe que no puede resistir su gangrenada vida, atosigada por el tormento y la desesperación. Lucha consigo mismo al no encontrar razones para alargar sus penurias.
14. No quiero morir
Poe se abandona a su suerte encerrándose en sí mismo, el alcohol y el opio. Agazapado en su sombrío universo agota su vida arruinado, sólo y ahogado en su angustia.
15. Embriagado de dolor
La muerte vuelve a visitar a Poe para llevársele consigo pero no le libera su tormento condenando a su espíritu a vagar errante hasta que encuentre paz en el amor.
16. Fe sin Dios
Jans Cercueil, enterrador casi anciano, llega con las primeras luces al cementerio para el cambio de turno y se encuentra a Marcel dormido. Éste le cuenta que un extraño gato negro le contó una inverosímil historia que quizás fuese producto de un mal sueño.
17. Alma Errante
Aunque él, aún hoy día, sigue asegurando que lo vio.
